Diabetic Testing

What is Diabetic Testing?

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has recommended that individuals at risk for or diagnosed with diabetes have their glycated hemoglobin tested regularly to identify their A1C value, which is a snapshot of a patients average blood sugar level over a period of time. These values are then compared with the ADA guidelines to identify the best course of treatment action for the prospective patients. Other types of laboratory tests that can be carried out include testing a patients fasting blood sugar level and carrying out random blood sugar tests to identify blood sugar levels throughout the course of a day. These tests can aid in identifying if a patient has normal levels of blood sugar, has prediabetes, or has full-blown type 2 diabetes. Oral glucose tolerance tests are a further option for assessing a patients’ ability to process sugar, but is most often carried out to diagnose gestational diabetes.
